• Verbs that end in /n/ or /m/ (but not those with /-am/ theme, which are called VAI2 verbs) cause lenition (shift from /s/ to /z/) of the initial /s/ of the negative suffix /-sii/, producing /z/. This is the only difference between nasal-final and vowel-final verbs in the independent negative.
