Verbs that end in /n/ or /m/ (but not those with
/-am/ theme, which are called VAI2 verbs) cause lenition (shift from /s/ to
/z/) of the initial /s/ of the negative suffix /-sii/, producing /z/. This is
the only difference between nasal-final and vowel-final verbs in the independent
negative.
Some other nasal-final verbs: maazhingwaam, 'sleep uncomfortably'
(and other verbs of sleeping having final /-ingwaam/; bangishin, 'fall'
(and many other verbs with final /-shin/, 'fall, lie, happen.'
